In Iceland herring is often referred to as the ‘silver of the sea’. In its heyday the tiny town of Siglufjordur reigned supreme over the industry. The Herring Era Museum pleasantly captures the ‘glory days’ in a trio of exhibitions set across three building located down by the delightful harbor.
At the boathouse, a 1950’s harbor atmosphere is brought to life including dancing and singing on sunny days. The museum recreates the story of fish meal and oil processing at Grana. In the third exhibition the salting process is demonstrated as it was done by the former ‘herring girls’. The girls arrived in droves during the summer to earn extra money working in fish. This award winning museum is well worth your while and the price of admission also includes the Ura Museum and the Folk Music Center.
