Kjarnaskogur (Kjarni forest) is an attractive wooded area and is owned by Akureyri Municipal Council but is under the guardianship of the Eyjafjordur Forestry Commission.
The first trees were planted in Kjarnaskogur in 1952 and the dominant species of trees are birch and larch but a number of other trees and shrubs also grow there.
The wild vegetation in these woods is also highly diversified, with more than 210 recorded species. Among the rare species there are strict primrose and bluebell.
What to do in Kjarnaskogur
The area has 7 km lighted trail in addition to a vast network of backcountry trails. Also there is a 10 km long designated mountain bike trail. There are two playgrounds, picnic areas, barbeque facilities, restrooms and a volley ball course as well. For bird lovers, the area has a very varied bird life, and even a bird watching shelter by the marsh Hundatjorn in Naustaborgir. Campsite at nearby Hamrar with easy access to the forest.
