The third highest waterfall in Iceland, Hengifoss, is eye-catching due to the striking red clay and black basalt patterns of the cliff face. It makes a pretty backdrop for the narrow ribbon of water cascading down.
As with several other waterfalls in country, you can climb behind the waterfall and there is a small cave to explore as well.
Trekking to the waterfall takes about 40-60 minutes from the parking lot. The trail is picturesque and beautiful. For example, it leads you by Litlanesfoss waterfall, where you can find remarkable basalt stone columns. The trail is moderately steep and well marked, and you need to show caution when walking close to the canyon, especially if you are hiking with children. The waterfall’s river runs into Lake Lagarfljot, home of the world famous wyrm monster Lagarfljotsormur.
When is the best time to visit the waterfall?
We recommend that you give yourself a good amount of time to enjoy your visit to Hengifoss waterfall. Its serene beauty offers some great photo opportunities. Therefore, summer time is a good time to visit the falls. We recommend that you visit the waterfall early in the day, when the sun shines directly on it.
During high season (July) it can be crowded by Hengifoss, especially in the parking area. If you don’t find a space to park, we recommend you just continue further into the valley and check the interesting Visitor’s Center at eastern Vatnajokull National Park at Skriduklaustur (5km). Afterwards, you get back to the parking area to see if some people have left.
